25/06/10, 12:00-18:00

In a one-day workshop, conducted by the buddies in electronic madness, Rob Hordijk and Joker Nies, participants will build an analog sound-device that is very different from what you usually will find with other DIY-kits.

The kit will ONLY be available through attending the workshop, it is not sold separately.

The Benjolin DIY-kit will be easy enough to build even for a beginner in electronics. After successfully building the instrument, which is guaranteed with the help of Rob and Joker, the workshop participants will take home a versatile and very unique analog synthesizer that can influence the behavior of other voltage-controlled modules through seven different control-voltages. It is also able to receive control-voltages for filter-frequency and both of its oscillators.

The Benjolin is a ‘noise box’ that is ‘bent by design’, meaning that it always has a definite amount of unpredictability while it is still intuitive to play. The Benjolin features two eighteen-octave range voltage controlled oscillators that drive a ‘rungler’ circuit, circuitry that in essence uses a special interference technique feeding back into the oscillators to force them into wild chaotic behaviour.

A special slightly chaotic filter is both excited and modulated by the signals from the rungler circuitry processes, producing sounds between fat drones to grungy noise havoc. The kit is somewhat more challenging to build compared to the Zeitgeist, but with a little patience and accuracy a beginner in DIY can definitely build it successfully.

http://web.me.com/klangbureau/DIY/Workshop.html

Rob Hordijk (The Hague, Netherlands)

Originally a sculptor and jewelry designer, Rob has established himself over the years as an expert in sound synthesis techniques. In the last couple of years he specializes in hand-build analog electronic instruments that have distinct sonic signatures, instruments that are somewhere between musical instruments and objets d’art. His instruments are used in live performances by a number of established improvisers all over the planet. An example of an instrument designed by Rob is the Blippoo Box, featured in the upcoming 19th issue of Leonardo Music Journal. Rob has been teaching, lecturing and conducting workshops since 1983 at a number of institutes in The Netherlands, and occasionally in other places on this planet.

Joker Nies (Cologne, Germany)

He is a musician, sound-designer, sound-engineer, photographer and technical editor for the German Sound&Recording and Keyboards magazines. Recent activities include software synth-design in MAX/MSP for the German Keyboards magazine, and production and sound design for radio-plays for the German WDR radio-broadcast.

Joker Nies is known for his energetic improvisations on unusual electronic instruments and re-built electronic toys all over Europe and the US. He has played with many established improvisers and is a.o. part of the trio Die Schrauber. Joker is a leading expert in circuit bending and has conducted many inspiring circuit-bending and DIY workshops in the whole of Europe and the USA.

Schedule for Workshop: June 25th 2010

12:00-18:00 (Till the instrument is finished this could take one extra hour depending on the nr. of breaks)

Workshop Location: @ NK Elsenstr. 52 2HH 2Etage 12059 Berlin

Participation is limited to 15 participants.

Registration: Pre-registration is required and can be done by sending an email to info@nkprojekt.de

Fee: 80€ (Parts) + 70€ (Participation fee Students get a 25% discount) = 150€

WORKSHOP 27-30 MAY 2010

Rafael Toral calls his playing style “post-free jazz electronic music”, once described as “a brand of electronic music far more visceral and emotive than that of his cerebral peers”. Toral’s Space Program delivers music that is full of clarity, articulating silence and sound in a thoughtful, yet physical way. A long time collaborator of Sei Miguel, he has performed throughout Europe, Canada, USA, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Australia, released 13 albums and produced the first Anthology of Portuguese Electronic Music. He is a member of MIMEO orchestra.

http://rafaeltoral.net

Electronic Music development has historically been mostly oriented to the sound source (technology) and the object (finished work). Unlike in jazz, the individual is rarely the focal point. More concerned with the musician than with the instrument, the Space Program is Rafael Toral’s long-term research into human performance possibilities in Electronic Music, a fundamental reevaluation of its conception, performance and experience.

The Space Program Workshop shares some concepts, focusing on how we make performance decisions. Aimed at musicians using hacked, bent, or custom electronic instruments, it raises fundamental questions about what can we do with them. The Workshop provides participants with conceptual tools for structuring musical discourse, with emphasis on phrasing from Space Program’s viewpoint.

The workshop has the duration of 4 days and covers topics like:

1. Matter: Instrumental choices and interface optimization.

2. Discourse: elaborating a syntax and articulating silence.

3. Composition: listening modes and macro-form decisions.

4. Performance: the body on stage and functions in a group.

Participants are enabled to perform collectively in the end.

What is required :

- The Space Program Workshop has to do with electronic instrument control. Your instrument absolutely needs to be able to instantly start and stop making sound.

- It is aimed at non-conventional electronic instruments that require a physical interaction. No keyboards. No classic instruments. No computers (except with gestural controllers).

- Previous hacking workshops and basic electronics knowledge are preferred.

- It’s about simplicity. Be prepared to focus and simplify your sound.

- A small mixer if you have several sources (your output should be one channel).

- Headphones (and your own monitor circuit, mixer, etc., if necessary)

What is offered :

- Focus on your instrument technique and choice of sounds to perform.

- Structure your sounds, establishing a personal lexicon.

- Exercise an articulated way of listening and dealing with silence and “space”.

- In short, to develop a physical, organic, elemental approach to electronic music.

Schedule for Workshop: May 2010

27: 15:00 – 19:30 (with coffee break)

28: 10:00 – 13:00 // lunch break // 14:30 – 18:00

29: 10:00 – 13:00 // lunch break // 14:30 – 18:00

30: 10:00 – 13:00 // lunch break // 14:30 – approx: 17:00 //

// move to ausland – sound check /performance at ausland LychenerStr. 60 10437 Berlin

Doors open at 9pm Performance begins at 10pm

Workshop Location: @ NK Elsenstr. 52 2HH 2Etage 12059 Berlin

Participation is limited to 6 participants.

Registration: Pre-registration is required and can be done by sending an email to info@nkprojekt.de

Tuesday 30th March 2010

The human voice is the oldest instrument of artistic expression and our primary means of day-to-day communication. Cultivating an awareness of vocal ability and understanding the process for removing vocal limitations is a useful undertaking for any person. The purpose of this workshop is to help individuals free their voices.

Participants will leave the workshop with an enhanced understanding of the expressive capacity of the voice across cultures, and the tools to expand their own voices beyond everyday speaking and singing.

in this workshop we will explore the voice as an instrument of the body and soul. Participants will receive instruction in extended techniques used by contemporary musicians and sound poets, while gaining awareness of multiphonics as practiced in a number of traditional and non-traditional settings, with particular emphasis on Tuvan throat singing. Instruction in these enriching techniques will be accompanied by discussion of aesthetic concerns related to the musical cultures covered.

The workshop will be limited to 12 students, so that each participant may have the opportunity to perform for each other in an intimate, supportive environment. This workshop is excellent for those working in interdiscliplinary fields, with interest areas in music, dance, theater, poetry, visual arts, healing sound, and ethnomusicology.

Arrington de Dionyso uses performance as a vehicle for driving through the nameless territories held between surrealist automatism, shamanic seance, and the folk imagery of rock and roll. Arrington performs on the bass clarinet, jaw harps, and his voice with a distinctly multiphonic ability inspired by Tuvan throatsinging and the ecclesiastics of Albert Ayler and Don Van Vliet. Pushing the envelope between musicality and pure energy, between shamanic ecstacy and lunacy, he enwraps rooms with resonant sound .

He tours constantly, and has performed or/and recorded with notable improvisers throughout the U.S.A., Canada, Italy, France, Israel and Japan. He presents workshops on improvising with the voice in conjunction with his travels around the world.

Date: 30th march 2010 (1Day)
Place: NK Elsenstr. 52 2HH 2 Etage 12059 Berlin

Some Testimonials from Workshop Participants-

“Arrington de Dionyso is a comfortable and patient teacher. He allows you to explore the more honest and primal parts of your voice and being. I would recommend this workshop to anyone who has a desire to step further into their own skin. As a performer and as a human being I have found this to be a raw, melting, educational, palateable and inspiring experience.”

“An eye opening, self reflective, healing and challenging experience I will never forget. Thank you for this experience and your knowledge.

Very supportive, open learning enviroment. I even learned how to breathe all over again. Great teacher!”

“Very inspiring, liberating, and encouraging to come to a group and feel a comfortable vulnerability, not only from the participants but the facilitator as well.”

“-smooth and natural progression and transitions, eventually into the depths of personal expression and ground breaking exploration.

-even if one has done this kind of thing before, there will be further opening, learning and appreciation of the mysteries contained within the human voice in all its diverse and extreme variance.”

“Arrington brings a reverence for vocal expression that is contagious, to share the company of and learn from someone who has an inherant awe for anything that could come out of us, is encouraging and humbling simultaneously.”

Time: 14:00 to 18:30 daily with 30 min break

This workshop allows each participant to build their own theremin. The first electronic instrument, invented in ’20 by Lev Termen.
Starting with instrument designs from these articles, www.cs.nmsu.edu/~rth/EMTheremin.pdf we will modify each theremin in a unique way. The built instruments will have the features of a real theremin, with more than 5 octaves and 2 antennas, for volume and pitch control.

Fees
100 Euros for participation + 55 Euros for parts
Registration: Preregistration is required and can be done by sending an email to enka_nk@gmx.de
All parts included except cabinet (see below)
- Electronic components, capacitors, resistors, transistors, ics, coils etc
- Printed Circuit Board
- Connectors, Mechanical parts: screws, spacers, washers, tube rod to build the 2 antennas, etc

Those who have access to these items through other means, must submit the parts list for a check before the beginning of the workshop.
workshop price minus parts is 100 euro

Cabinet
The cabinet sizes have the main role in the behaviour of the instrument and its playability.
The two antenna (horizontal volume loop on left and vertical pitch rod on right) may be spaced in a range from L= 400 – 500 mm, to avoid interferences The other two are related to the overall dimensions of electronics and the other devices as antenna connectors etc: must be l 120-140mm X h 40-50mm. Thickness from 10 – to max 14mm. The cabinet has its cover. All conductive materials are not advisable.
Wood (plywood) or MDF (Medium density fiber)are as cheapest as reccomended.
We can refinish some holes on the cabinet during the workshop
Recycled enclosures, a broken C64, 128 or VIC20, an old tubes radio receiver, will host the electronic of your theremin. Set in motion your imagination and eyes during your walks and visits to flea markets.
A complete cabinet ready to be drilled and used, we suggest a box like this, item 520780-62 from Conrad http://www1.conrad.de :sizes are far below only in widht L min, (310mm) but the instrument can still operate properly only with a little modification.
You can also build, test your electronic antennas in a mannequin-box, waiting to fit into your cabinet

Every participant would bring
Soldering iron (Lötkolben) 30w 20-45W max – 230volt round tip (spitze) of 1.5mm I.E http://www1.conrad.de, items 588552-LN or 588332-LN

POWER SUPPLY (WALL WART ADAPTER – STECKERNETZGERÄT) standard 230 volt ac – 12-14 volt AC 300mA . This is a very popular device, take a look in your house. ATTENTION:switching mode power supply is not allowed

Cutter, screwdrivers and pliers, a multimeter and 2 mt of soldering wire Sn60%Pb40%, are welcome but we have some of these items and we can share these things

From 16th to 18th February 2010

Francisco López is internationally recognized as one of the major figures of the sound art and experimental music scene. Over the past 30 years he has developed an astonishing sonic universe, absolutely personal and iconoclastic, based on a profound listening of the world. Destroying boundaries between industrial sounds and wilderness sound environments, shifting with passion from the limits of perception to the most dreadful abyss of sonic power, proposing a blind, profound and transcendental listening, freed from the imperatives of knowledge and open to sensory and spiritual expansion.

He has realized hundreds of concerts, projects with field recordings, workshops and sound installations in 60 countries of the five continents. His extensive catalog of sound pieces (with live and studio collaborations with over 100 international artists) has been released by more than 200 record labels worldwide, and he has been awarded three times with honorary mentions at the competition of Ars Electronica Festival. [Pedro Higueras, Sonom Studios]
Website

This theoretical workshop is focused on the historical, sociological and philosophical (rather than technical) aspects of different practices that have the “real world” as a source, or an inspiration, for sonic creation. From ancestral manifestations of music derived from nature to the present massive sonic exploration of our world, analyzing the historical attempts at recording sonic reality and creatively transform it, from musical notation to digital technology. With a multitude of sonic examples, from traditional to electronic music, the workshop aims at stirring up discussion and at challenging many stereotypical and misleading conceptions about recorded sound in many diverse areas and objects of study, from bioacoustics to experimental
music, from phonographs to hard disk recorders, from birds to cosmic radio emissions.
