May 21-24 2012 4Day workshop 18:00-22:30

Heartbeat to anything provides an opportunity to explore and experiment with the manifold possibilities of the human heartbeat as a medium and source for artistic expression. Artists, designers, musicians and others interested in heartbeat-based biofeedback, music, sound art, sonification and visualisation, live visuals, light art, dance or interaction are welcome to join this workshop.

Heartbeat to anything is suitable for practitioners with different levels of expertise in digital technologies. The workshop starts with a general introduction into the history of heartbeat based artistic work, medical basics and available technology. Each participant will be provided with a heartbeat sensor which has been successfully used in performance situations for many years.

For those familiar with programming, necessary code snippets are provided for common artistic programming environments like Max, Puredata, Supercollider, Processing, Open Frameworks, vvvv, Audiomulch or Quartz Composer to immediately be able to work with our sensors.

For participants working with software who don’t want to get into programming a ready-to-use software that converts the sensor data into MIDI, OSC and DMX messages will be provided. It serves as interface to virtually any music and live video software without further programming knowledge (e.g. Live, Logic, Cubase, Renoise, Reaktor, VDMX, Modul8, Resolume), to control external MIDI hardware like synths or samplers and to control stage light.
Instrumentalists with programming knowledge or in collaboration with someone with the necessary skills can develop interactive realtime scores. Dancers/performers can develop interactive sound/light/visual environments.

Participants are encouraged to develop demo pieces which will be presented at the end of the workshop.

The workshop is led by Peter Votava (Berlin) and Erich Berger who draw their expertise from years of working with the Heart Chamber Orchestra project.

The Heart Chamber Orchestra is an audiovisual performance consisting of 12 classical trained musicians and the artist duo TERMINALBEACH. Using their heartbeats, the musicians control a computer composition and visualization environment. They read and play a real-time score from laptop screens placed in front of them. More information at http://heartchamberorchestra.org

A three day workshop actively exploring the effects of electromagnetic fields on living systems; on the human body and the human psyche.

The effects of complex field interactions with such systems, particularly with the psyche, are largely unknown and open to debate. Field Effect proposes to obtain first-hand,experimental knowledge of these relations, using DIY technologies. Experiments already suggest links between low frequency electromagnetic emissions and experiences of hauntings and UFO sightings.

The first two days will be devoted to the construction of devices to both generate and measure magnetic fields and to examine the effects of these fields on living systems (such as plants or moulds), and on the body and psyche (measuring skin temperature, skin resistance, heartrate). In parallel, a series of experimental situations will be constructed to provide insights into the interactions between complex spectral ecologies (communication technologies such as wireless networks, mobile phone bases, TV, radio, power lines, motors, all electronic devices) and life.

Participants will learn how to construct simple devices to measure heart rate and skin resistance, how to interface these to software and log/interpret results and how to intervene within electromagnetic space. No previous knowledge of fields required.

Date: January 20, 21, 22 Time: 12:00-19:00

So you’ve started developing for the iPhone, experimented with Objective-C and the user interface and made some apps of your own. Now what? The depths of the Cocoa Touch framework are so enormous that almost anything is possible. In this 3 part workshop using the latest iOS 5, we will explore just a few of these possibilities, the aim being to take away a finished app at the end of each session. The workshop will have an emphasis on interactive, creative and fun projects.

Each week a topic will be discussed, some ideas presented and a walkthrough for the basis of the app will take place. Some code snippets and helper classes are provided, and from then on it’s up to each participant to use their imagination to customise the end result.

Session 1 (20 Nov): Draw
The course begins with the making a “drawing” app – using the finger on the screen to make pictures with lines and other shapes, possibly animating them, and saving the results to the user’s picture library. But this will be more than just a mini-photoshop! It will allow the user to collaborate with others nearby, using bluetooth communication.

Session 2 (27 Nov): Camera
The inclusion of two cameras on recent iOS devices opens up many possibilities. The app we will make this week goes beyond the obvious to include pixel manipulation (slit-scanning, action freezing) and alternative representations of the data (pixellated or raster display.)

Session 3 (4 Dec): Game
iOS 5 makes it easier than ever to use OpenGLES, the standard graphics programming environment for mobile phones. We will be making a simple 2D game, exploring the topics of collision detection, sound effects and using the accelerometer, and possibly reusing the bluetooth communication code from week 1.

The workshop will be given by Chris Jeffs, author of 4 apps on the store that have been released this year. More info can be found at http://chrisjeffs.com.

IMPORTANT!

This workshop is aimed at intermediate iPhone programmers. For information about the level of ability required, please visit http://www.chrisjeffs.com/idt2011info.html

The use of XCode 4.2, and an iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad running iOS5 is compulsory. For the Camera workshop, a device with at least one camera is needed. No installation help will be provided.

If you have any questions about the content, email 2649@chrisjeffs.com

Dates: Sundays Nov 20, 27, Dec 4

Times: 13:00-18:00

Fee: 25 Euros/session or 60 Euros for all sessions if paid at the beginning of the course

October 26, 27, and 28 2011

Not so much, or not only, a software workshop, but rather a composition course in electronic music which takes as its starting point the use of noise, similar to the (white) canvas of a painter or rather to the block of stone of a sculptor.

Considering the noise as the sole input, more attention will be paid to its internal structure as well to its different shapes and colors, including way to manipulate it from the inside, starting the composition on the input material itself rather that only on its transformations.

The noise can of course be created by strictly digital means but can also be “extracted” from the “real world” – and one way to do so without simply recording what’s “outside”, is to use webcams to bring a digital version of the world – vision being transformed into (noisy) sounds.

Noise, as in white noise, pink noise, black, fractal, etc, as the prime, or even only source for real-time composition/synthesis ; then we work on blocks of sound and not on pitches, have “clouds” of sound with more or less precise limits – “uncertain limits” -, different textures of different densities. Close to the orchestral ideas of people such as Ligeti, Penderecki, Xenakis or Scelsi.

The examples will be given in Max/MSP and Jitter, but other softwares are welcome, as the workshop is much more about the “why” than the “how”, and the goal is to create a composition based on the ideas explored there.

K T Toeplitz
———————
Kasper Toeplitz is a composer, electric bass player and musician who has developed his work in the no man’s land between “academic” composition (orchestra, ensembles, opera) and electronic “new music” or “noise music”.

Has won several prizes and distinctions ; 1st prize for orchestral composition at the Besançon Festival, 1st prize at the “Opéra autrement / centre Acanthes” competition, Villa Médicis Hors les Murs (New York), grant Leonardo da Vinci (San Francisco) , Villa Kujoyama (Kyoto), DAAD (Berlin).
Got numerous commissions from the French Governement, the radio and from electronic studios such as Ircam, GRM , GMEM, CRFMW, EMS..
Works with experimental or unclassifiable musicians such as Zbigniew Karkowski, Tetsuo Furudate, Dror Feiler, Art Zoyd, Eliane Radigue, Phill Niblock, Ulrich Krieger, Stevie Wishart, Z’ev, among others.

Some of his long-term groups or projects are LE DEPEUPLEUR (with Zbigniew Karkowski), KERNEL (a trio of computer players), Basstaarang (with Philippe Foch playing taarang), Ephémérides (bass & image by Strom Varx)
Has definitively integrated the computer into the very heart of his work, as a tool of thought and composition, and as a live instrument, hybridising more traditional instruments if necessary, or working on the sheer electronic noise.

Every Tues in Oct 2011 (4, 11, 18, 25) 18:00-22:00

Since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007, Apple’s iOS has come to have a dominating presence in the smartphone market. Between them, the iPhone and iPad look set to sell 120 million units this year, and half a million apps are already on the iPhone App Store. But impressive as these statistics might be, they don’t provide a reason to engage with the platform. So why learn to develop for the iPhone?

The iPhone and its related family of devices (iPad and iPod Touch) are packed with sensors – a touchscreen, 2 cameras, a microphone, an accelerometer… taken together, whether used for productivity or games, they provide an experience unthinkable a few years ago. Major advances in human – computer interaction are being made right now, and it’s time to get involved.

Apple’s multimedia frameworks provide the low-level, responsive access to the hardware that is required to create compelling apps. Unfortunately, starting to program for the iPhone can be a daunting prospect. It involves learning the Objective-C language, the Cocoa frameworks and getting used to the XCode environment. There are plenty of step-by-step guides on the internet and in print, but they can leave you none the wiser.

This course is aimed at those who already have a little experience of programming, perhaps with a scripting language or a creative-coding environment such as Processing. It will introduce Objective-C and the concept of object-oriented programming, along with using Cocoa.

The workshop will be given by Chris Jeffs, author of 4 apps on the store that have been released this year. More info can be found at http://chrisjeffs.com.

REQUIREMENTS – IMPORTANT!

You MUST have a copy of XCode 4 running on your machine. This can be found on the Mac App Store, or is available for no extra charge to registered Apple developers.

If you have any questions about the content or installing xcode, email 2649@chrisjeffs.com

You don’t actually need a device, as limited testing in the iPhone simulator provided in XCode is possible. However, if you do wish to install your apps onto real hardware (running iOS 4.3+), it is recommended to sign up as a developer. This also allows limited ad-hoc distribution. Information can be found at http://developer.apple.com/programs/ios/. Other solutions (jailbreaking and so on) may work, but will not be covered in this course.

Dates: Every Tues in Oct (4, 11, 18, 25)
Times: 18:00-22:00
Fee: 25 Euros/session or 80 Euros for all sessions if paid at the beginning of the course

SuperCollider is an environment and programming language for real time audio synthesis and algorithmic composition. But what does that mean?

“Programming” is the act of giving a computer instructions to follow. Using SuperCollider involves typing commands into a text window and getting some sounds in return. So why would anybody want to do that?

	- for musicians: to have greater control over synthesis and create sounds not possible through other means.
- for sound engineers or scientists: to have a better understanding of the nature of sound and digital audio.
- for composers: to explore the world of algorithmic composition, an area in which SuperCollider excels.

-for the curious: to investigate something new and different, and make some cool sounds.

This course assumes no prior knowledge whatsoever in the fields of computer science or sound synthesis. Starting from “what is a synthesizer,” and with an emphasis on practical action, we progress quickly to making and controlling sound patches, taking in digital audio synthesis and computing topics as they arise.

To prepare for participation in this introductory course, download and install a free version of SuperCollider at the link below:

This hands-on workshop introduces and explores key concepts of interaction design for electronic musical interactions (EMIs) and live musical performance. Participants will be introduced to interaction design concepts and practices as we explore them through hands-on physical sketching with simple electronic instrument circuitry, circuit bending and hardware hacking. The workshop will culminate in a specific design challenge for the participants, challenging them to create a new performance- ready circuit bent musical instrument within detailed constraints.

The Workshop Leaders:
Cavan Fyans is a PhD research student in the performative interaction research
group at the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC), Queen’s University Belfast. His
work examines the spectator’s perception & understanding of novel electronic
musical interactions. Cavan spends time developing new and innovative ways of
breaking cheap consumer electronics (Circuit Bending & Hardware Hacking) in order to re-purpose them into musical instruments for live performance.

www.cfyans.com

Adnan Marquez-Borbon is a PhD research student in the performative interaction
research group at the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC), Queen’s University
Belfast. His current line of research focuses on the process of learning and
development of skill with novel musical instruments. As an instrument builder, his
interest lies mainly in the intersection between acoustic wind instruments and
electronics.

cc.ma.stanford.edu/~adnanm

Detailed Description:
Concepts such as modes of interaction, affordances, constraints, style, user and
spectator experience, are central to the fields of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and interaction design. However, the increasingly popular and diverse disciplines of DIY EMIs, specifically circuit bending and hardware hacking, often fail to consider such concepts in the creation of novel musical instruments. This is commonly due to both restrictions imposed by the bent or hacked device (“there’s limited space on the speak & spell to put extra buttons”) and by the introvert nature of DIY EMIs; many electronic luthiers creations are only ever performed by the luthier themselves (“no one else will play my instrument so it doesn’t matter how easy it is to work”).

The workshop addresses design considerations in a field where options, possibilities, physicality and cost are restricted. Participants will explore how consideration of affordances and constraints can lead to new, innovative and creative designs. Taking into consideration the experience of both the performer and the spectator in live performance, participants will address how we can improve live performance situations with hacked EMIs through simple interaction design concepts.

During the workshop participants will be introduced to the interaction design
concepts as we explore them through hands-on examples and physical sketching
with simple electronic instrument circuitry. As a group we will examine and discuss instrument design considerations and participants will be presented with a specific design challenge. Through the hands-on experience progressing through brainstorming, physical sketching, hacking, testing and modeling, participants will create a new circuit bent instrument from the design challenge whilst learning about and exploring these central concepts of interaction design.
