From July 15th to August 20th, 2010.

S.LOW is a Berlin-based cross-disciplinary project involving 34 international and national visual artists, music composers working with electronic media, musicologists, performers, engineers, physical scientists and film-makers. The project aims to articulate synergies from such a mixed community of individuals who have been invited to respond to the concept of ‘slow’ and or ‘low ‘, in the context of the city of Berlin.

A major focus exists on the exchange of methodologies and knowledge, to address similar creative questions, which will investigate ideas such as; the creative use of s/low technologies versus cutting-edge ones; the degree of speed built into the creative process/thinking, particularly in cross-disciplinary works; high-low cultural streams as experienced by participants coming from academic and non-academic environments; slow/fast environmental impact of art and artists producing art; and finally, it has additional scope for investigation around vocabulary such as; low-cost/ recycled materials/low-budget/open source and related grammar.

As the result of collaborations among practitioners and their interaction with the local community, expected outcomes will range from the creation of new works, to residencies, screenings, discussion of methodologies employed, workshops, performances, coffee roundtables, etc., which will take place from July 15th to August 20th, 2010.

PRESENTATION 30/06/10, 19:00h

Iain McCurdy is a composer and inventor currently working mostly in the medium of sound installation. The pieces that he builds are in some ways anti-technology in that they hide away any technology they use underneath natural materials, primary colours and interfaces that encourage play rather than performance. The technology that is used is often derived from everyday objects – there are no touch-screens or brand names here. The final act of composition is passed on to the visitor when these pieces are installed but the majority of compositional control is still retained by the composer, the activities required when interacting with these pieces provide a metaphor for the compositional processes instilled into the pieces by the composer.

SCREENING PRESENTATION EXHIBITION 06/06/10 18 UHR

‘1515’ is a collaborative work between ANEMONE TUBE and GUSTAVO DE LACERDA. The video was directed and edited by the brazilian artist GUSTAVO DE LACERDA, shot in Rotterdam from September 2006 to September 2007. The soundtrack created by ANEMONE TUBE is based on real-time field recordings made in Nanjing and Shanghai. Soundtrack mastered by JAMES PLOTKIN, 2010.

MEDITATIONS FROM A SOUND- a CD release by swedish artist/composer Peter Uhr living in Berlin and at the Koster Sound on an island in Skagerack. Music composed with the chakra points in mind. He works with ambiences from nature and cosmos combined with various textures on classical western and oriental instruments.

‘1515’ will be released end of May 2010 as special edition bonus DVD along with ANEMONE TUBE`s CD release ‘Dream Landscape’ – the first official solo release by ANEMONE TUBE after 9 years of silence. Originally founded in 1996 in Southern Germany, ANEMONE TUBE has quite made a name for himself in the industrial/noise genre – especially due to the psychogenic nature of his music. On this new release ANEMONE TUBE creates massive ambient/noise soundscapes. The sounds are pulsating, drowning and floating, tormenting and caressing – all culminating in a haunting sonic experience. ‘Dream Landscape’ is – together with the album ‘Death over China’ (to be released by Waystyx Records/Russia) – the first part of the ‘Suicide Series’. To this field recordings made in China provide a conceptional basis.

GUSTAVO DE LACERDA has studied Industrial Design, Art and Philosophy in Rio De Janeiro. In 2007 he graduated as Master in Graphic Design at St. Joost Academy, Breda, The Netherlands. His first video VAGA-LUME / FIREFLY DVD was selected for the Mostra do Filme Livre, Rio De Janeiro, 2007. Since 2009 he lives and works in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

REVIEW: ANEMONE TUBE ‘DREAM LANDSCAPE’ CD

”I was pretty excited when Stefan contacted me about the renewed ANEMONE TUBE, and for good reason: I’m not sure if it’s a taste so many others share, but I always found Anemone Tube material particularly well planned and unquestionably focused. This new round of material is largely sourced from field recordings made in China, supplemented on ‘Dream Landscape’ with some subtle synth tones, all patiently honed and effected for a genuinely unique amalgamation of sounds which owes more to ANENZEPHALIA-esque power electronics mannerisms than it does to typically apparent field recording collectors.
There’s no intention here to recreate a mood or time already passed; instead – and somewhat similarly to JOHN WATERMANN’s essential ‘CALCUTTA GAS CHAMBER’ (CD on ND / Cold Spring and 12” on Die Stadt) – the sounds are shaped, looped, treated and manifested into a completely new, more invigorated shape. Particularly malevolent is “Demoniac Reign”, adding ominous muffled speech fragments to the flaying high-end storms and dramatic synth drone which are the common themes to ‘Dream Landscape’. But each track making up this half hour or so has its own energy and blend of textures, all with that assuredness found on previous Anemone Tube recordings.”

CONCERT | 25/04/2010, 16:00h

Exhibition . Dvd Presentation . Live Performance

Leif Elggren has become one of the most constantly surprising conceptual artists to work in the combined worlds of audio and visual.

A writer, visual artist, stage performer and composer. His music, often conceived as the soundtrack to a visual installation or experimental stage performance, usually presents carefully selected sound sources over a long stretch of time and can range from mesmerizingly quiet electronics to harsh noise. His wide-ranging and prolific body of art often involves dreams and subtle absurdities, social hierarchies turned upside-down, hidden actions and events taking on the quality of icons.

Elggren spent five years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, specializing in drawing and bookprinting. In the late 1970s he began to associate with performance groups, meeting people like Hausswolff and Thomas Liljenberg. With the latter he formed Firework in 1978, a duo that put up exhibitions and performances. Around the same time he purchased a press and started to publish books (artists’ books).

Together with artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff, he is a founder of the Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland (KREV) where he enjoys the title of King. The Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland [KREV] were proclaimed in 1992 and consist of all Border Territories: Geographical, Mental & Digital. Elgaland-Vargaland is the largest and most populous realm on Earth, incorporating all boundaries between other nations as well as Digital Territory and other states of existence. Every time you travel somewhere, and everytime you enter another form, such as the dream state, you visit Elgaland-Vargaland.

Program

16:00 – Exhibition of visual works by Leif Elggren, including his ongoing tabloid/magazine ‘The New Immortality’ and 38 new drawings from March and April 2010 made for a CD-Edition. Also information about the Kingdom of Elgaland-Vargaland will be available and every visitor is invited to become a citizen of KREV (please bring 2 passport photos!)

18:00 – DVD-Presentation of ‘Death Travels Backwards’, a newly published DVD on Errant Bodies Press (/)

documentating Leif Elggren’s ongoing engagement and use of video. Cataloguing a collection of works from 1999 to the present, ‘Death Travels Backwards’ delivers an important overview of the artist’s pursuit of the hidden secrets and spectral enigmas found within the everyday.
