The collective of Marcel Weber and Lucy Benson, MFO (vimeo.com/mfo) create and direct audiovisual performances, installations, video and image works. Intense and distinct aesthetics define their work. Concept takes priority over technique, the meaning defines the method. New and old media forms, technology and illusionary devices are employed equally. MFO aims at the subconscious over the conscious, emotion over intellect, ambiguity over well-defined.

MFO are resident visual artists for multiple event series focused on the exploration of contemporary electronic music in Berlin and internationally. Performances and installations have featured at festivals such as CTM and Transmediale (Berlin), Unsound (Krakow), TodaysArt (Den Haag), as well as various events across Europe, USA and Australia. Recent collaborations include audiovisual performances with the likes of Kode 9, Roly Porter and Oni Ayhun. Additionally MFO contributes video design to high culture productions, having worked with the Opera national de Paris, the Akademie der Künste Berlin, Sophiensaele Berlin and the Brut theatre in Vienna. Larger projects are realised with an extended network of artists, MFO seeks constantly to collaborate, inform and evolve.

Thorsten Fleisch (fleischfilm.com) was born 1972 in Koblenz (Germany). He made his first film experiments with his dad’s Super 8 camera when still in school. Later he studied experimental film with Prof. Peter Kubelka at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. Thorsten Fleisch works with digital and analogue film. With materials such as the body, crystals, fire and electricity, he worked directly on 16 mm film strips. Crystals are grown on the film and 30,000 volts burn through photo paper. The results are poetic and abstract visual systems with references to catharsis, cosmos and the universe. In 2003 Fleisch received an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica in Linz (Austria) for his computer animated film Gestalt. High voltage is the centre of his work Energie! for which he has won international acclaim. His films received several awards and were shown at festivals worldwide like: New York Film Festival, Ars Electronica, Transmediale, Ottawa International Animation Festival, Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, San Francisco Film Festival, Videoex. Among other clients he has worked for Gaspar Noé (electric titles for Enter The Void) and Basement Jaxx (live visuals for Jump and Shout). He lives and works in Berlin.

The mixed-media collective Sansculotte (sansculotte.de) will present their 2-players live video patch and talk about visions, technology, aesthetics and how to spend a lot of time building universes that fall apart 99 seconds later.

Along the way will be mentioned: pure data, glsl, digital cut-up, appropriation and information overload.

Opening Night Nov 5, 2011 19:00-21:00
Nov 6-12 Daily from 14:00-17:00

Artists: Merja Nieminen and James Andean
“Re:****Sitruuna ja meduusa” is an audiovisual installation.
The installation constructs a ‘live’ dynamic system, comprised of projected 3D graphics and projected sound, creating a virtual environment or ecosystem which changes and evolves in real-time. It explores the capacity of the spectator to create relationships – to build worlds – from multiple sensory information.

The completed work runs live in the Processing and MaxMSP programming environments. The visuals are constantly being freshly generated by Processing, and output to projectors in the gallery space; being live, the work never presents the same scene twice – each and every visual moment is entirely unique.

Relationships are kept in a delicate balance between clarity and obscurity. Are visible behaviours triggered and controlled by sound, or do their behaviours create sound? Are we listening to their actions, or are we watching them respond to the sounds of their environment? This projected universe operates on its own laws; familiar, but somehow elusive. These laws appear to be based in sound, or to emit sound: objects turn; the projected world turns… while sound events strike, scurry past, or resonate…

James Andean is a musician and sound artist. He is active as both a performer and a composer in a range of fields, including electroacoustic composition and performance, improvisation, sound installation, and sound recording. He is a founding member of improvisation and new music quartet The Rank Ensemble and of the sound collective Resonator Helsinki, and one half of the audiovisual performance art duo Plucié/DesAndes. He has performed in Finland, Sweden, Russia, Germany, Italy and Canada, and his works have been performed in Finland, Norway, Russia, Portugal, Canada and China.

Merja Nieminen is a Finnish visual artist who currently lives and works in Helsinki. Her studies include architecture studies in the University of Technology, Helsinki, and media art studies in Medialab, University of Art and Design, Helsinki. She works in collaboration with artists from diverse fields including electro acoustic rhytm music, classical music, dance and new circus. Current projects include collaborations with Tuomas Norvio, James Andean, Defunensamble, Mikko Kallinen Company, Circo Aereo and Meidän Orkesteri. Her works include abstract animations for audio visual performances and installations.

Halim El-Dabh composed his first experimental piece in Cairo in 1944, his work can be related to other pioneers such as Luigi Russolo, John Cage, Walter Ruttmann, and Pierre Schaeffer. The official history of experimental and electronic music is mostly centered around three starting poles : Paris, Cologne, New York and then everything seems to have spread all over the Western civilization. This is what I learned when I studied electro-acoustic music at the conservatory. Most contemporary media introduces us to Western electronic music as if nothing else existed, the West is self-centered and consciously or not often denies the others the right to express themselves.

Have you ever heard about the pioneers who composed electro-acoustic music in Israel, Japan, Iran, Turkey or Indonesia in the 1950′s and 1960′s ? The Filipino experimental scene ? The Chinese sound art scene ? The Tunisian electronica ? The South African shangaan electro ? The Lebanese dubstep and breakcore parties?

This lecture will be an introduction to my research on electronic and experimental music in Africa and Asia, from 1944 until today.

Thursday & Friday June 16, 2011- Dancing on Ashes (Amsterdam) 22:00 &
June 17th Dancing on Ashes (Circle) 22:00

Dancing on Ashes (Amsterdam) / Dancing on Ashes (Circle)

Dancing on Ashes is a multimedia performance series mixing live music and projected narrative texts. An attempt to create a new approach to literature by transposing it into the field of performance arts, it is the backbone of the Angel Meat transmedia project conceived by Ines Birkhan and Bertram Dhellemmes.

Dancing on Ashes performances are based on fictional characters and situations that you will find in several other mediums – novel, posters, videos, blogs… – gathered in Angel Meat. Each performance is both a new chapter in a big narrative and an experiment in the staged literature medium.

Dancing on Ashes (Amsterdam) is a performance-installation staging self-playing music instruments. It tells the story of Yu, a dancer who decides to join the Dancing on Ashes cabaret show.

Dancing on Ashes (Circle) is a music + text performance with Bertram Dhellemmes playing electronics, that will premiere in NK. You will learn about the Triangle Circle, a group of friends to which belong Skullface, one of the main protagonists of Angel Meat.

“The Color of Pomegranates” of Sergei Parajanov
79min Armenia (SU) 1968
Orginal (no dialoges)

Trailer

Synopsis:

One of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century, Sergei Parajanov ‘s “Color of the Pomegranate”, a biography of the Armenian troubadour Sayat Nova (King of Song) reveals the poet’s life more through his poetry than a conventional narration of important events in Sayat Nova ‘s life. We see the poet grow up, fall in love, enter a monastery and die, but these incidents are depicted in the context of what are images from Sergei Parajanov’s imagination and Sayat Nova’s poems, poems that are seen and rarely heard. Sofiko Chiaureli plays 6 roles, both male and female, and Sergei Parajanov writes, directs, edits, choreographs, works on costumes, design and decor and virtually every aspect of this revolutionary work void of any dialog or camera movement.

The director had claimed his inspiration was “the Armenian illuminated miniatures. I wanted to create that inner dynamic that comes from inside the picture, the forms and the dramaturgy of colour.”
