A monthly meeting in which two sound artists will be invited to play solo sets with a final match (1+1) as speculative (z) process. A series of live performances involving modified devices, handbag electronics, open hardware, custom software and unstable systems.
http://r-aw.cc/11

Ignaz Schick: Turntablist, sound artist, performer & composer.
In his youth he studied the saxophone and performed in free jazz and avant rock bands. At the same time he was getting obsessed with multitrack tape machines, record players and effect boxes and he started experimenting with many different instruments and sound making devices. After college he briefly studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and worked for several years as an assistent for the contemporary composer Josef Anton Riedl.

Since the late 1995 he works and lives in Berlin where he became an active and integral force of the so-called “Berlin Nouvelle Vague” and the blossoming “real time music” scene. From the middle of the nineties onwards his interest and activities almost completely shifted towards live-electronics and after testing various instrumentations (hard- & software samplers, signal processing, contact mics, field recordings, …) he developed his own and quite unique electro-acoustic set-up which he calls “rotating surfaces”. Various objects and materials (from wood, metal, plastic, paper or violin bows and cymbals) are played directly on the rotating metal plate of the turntable and the vibrations are simply amplified with a small condensator microphone. With this set-up he covers many different styles of contemporary experimental music – ranging from extreme reductionism via ambient, industrial, musique concrete, electronica to harsh noise.

MARIA CHAVEZ
Born in Peru, avant-turntablist Maria Chavez currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.

Chavez’s work is focused on short solo electro-acoustic sound pieces using a collection of new and broken needles that she calls “pencils of sound” and a selection of records, which provide the palette. Many of her live sound installations have focused on the paradox of time and the present moment, with many influences stemming from improvisation in contemporary art.

Her work has been recognized by the Jerome Foundation, which awarded her the Emerging Artist Grant by New York’s Roulette Intermedium in 2008. In 2009, she became a recipient of the Van Lier Fellowship which is generously offered to young sound artists by The Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund of the New York Community Trust.

She has traveled extensively, sharing the stage with Pauline Oliveros, Alan Licht, Phil Niblock, and Otomo Yoshihide to name just a few. She has performed in venues including the Contemporary Arts Museum in Bordeaux, France; the Akademies der Kunste in both Vienna and Berlin; and Sonoteca in Lima, Peru. She was an artist in residence in 2008 with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and the DIA:Beacon Museum and recently performed for Christian Marclay at the Whitney Museum of American Art in NYC as part of Christian Marclay: FESTIVAL.

Roc Jiménez de Cisneros & Anna Ramos cordially invite you to an ALKU event with live music, synthetic birds and hot Mexican chocolate.

EVOL (live performance for computer and gas horns)
Since the late nineties, EVOL have been producing what they call “computer music for hooligans”, giving birth to musical forms built upon a collision of structural ideas inspired by fractal geometry, glimpses of quantum theory and rave culture. From glowsticks to air horns, strangely familiar vocalisations and noise, their music displays a radical and playful approach to algorithmic composition. EVOL pieces have been published on record labels such as Entr’acte, Mego, Presto!? and ALKU amongst others.

Rara Avis (informal sneak preview)
“Rara Avis” is a collective project about birdsong synthesis. The compilation, to be published by ALKU this fall, features contributions from Chris Brown (US), Oswald Berthold (AT), Anders Dahl (SE), Roc Jiménez de Cisneros (ES), Fredrik Olofsson (SE), and Peter Worth (UK). All of them wrote generative audio programs that imitate or recreate bird speech through various synthesis techniques. This is the first public preview of the records’ contents.

CONCERT 12/06/2010, 21:00h

Dominique Vaccaro (IT) & Mario de Vega (MX)

Dominique Vaccaro is mainly focused on collage in a broad meaning of the term, extending the field of action from the visual to include sound. Self-taught musician, he has experimented for years with the various possibilities of magnetic tape mixing short waves, field recordings, voice, guitars and other instruments, objects, feedback and all kind of residual sound. His approach to all of these is emotive, intimate and instinctive, flowings of sonic improvisation alternating frenetic phrases with calm, delicate moments.

http://myspace.com/dominiquevaccaro

Mario de Vega’s work overlaps relations between stability, failure, simulation and ambiguity with site-specific interventions, sound events, process-oriented projects, sculpture and sound improvisation.
As an improviser, his practice explores the value of fragility & in-determination involving a wide range of customized objects, analog and modified electronics, turntables and computer based interfaces in different combinations.

http://mariodevega.info/

El Gusano Rojo(FR) aka Yvan Volochine is a musician, producer and programmer.
He runs the label “Hijos de Puta”, on which he produced several obscure
and original music records since 2001.
Now based in Berlin, he programs his own instruments to perform live.

http://www.yvanvolochine.com

http://soundcloud.com/elgusanorojo

http://www.hijos-de-puta.org

Timur Kuyanov(RUS) genre – nanostep
He will not let those giant excellent-sounding machines full of high-grade electronic components producing mind-blowing musical progressions take control over him! Using new generation of embedded devices, micro synthesizers and minimum of controls artist proves possibility of producing massive-sounding and dynamic performance in aesthetics of synthesized organic structures reminding one of neo-futuristic dreams of cyberpunk megapolis daily life.

http://soundcloud.com/kuyanov

JULIAN BONEQUI(MX)

He tries to break the drum itself and the use of percussion
and what it represents as a symbolic figure in music.
His exploration involves the decomposition of sound between
freedom and silence, harmonic flow environments and
circular textures over emotional discontrol and feedback.

“Bell Field Praxis.”
Kenneth Atchley and John Bischoff will perform a ‘live’ set of computer/electronic pieces, involving
input sounds from small objects and video.
Two solo performances concluding with a duo.

Golden Fur is a trio comprising Samuel Dunscombe (clarinet/laptop) Judith Hamann (violoncello) and James Rushford (keyboard/viola).

Bischoff will perform three recent pieces that project sound into a framed space where details are highlighted and recycled as a context for further contemplation.

JOHN BISCHOFF (b. 1949, San Francisco) has been active in the experimental music scene in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 30 years as a composer, performer, and teacher. He is known for his solo constructions in real-time computer synthesis and the pioneering development of computer network music. His performances around the US include NEW MUSIC AMERICA festivals in 1981 (SF) and 1989 (NYC), Lampo (Chicago), and the Beyond Music Festival (LA). He has performed numerous times in Europe at such venues as the Festival d’Automne in Paris, Akademie der KŸnst in Berlin, Fylkingen in Stockholm, and Tesla in Berlin. He was a founding member of the League of Automatic Music Composers (1978) and he co-authored an article on the League’s music that appears in “Foundations of Computer Music” (MIT Press 1985). He is also a founding member of the network band The Hub that released a 3-CD set of their work in 2007 titled ÒBoundary LayerÓ on Tzadik. In 1999 he received an award from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts (NYC) in recognition of his music. Recordings of his work are available on Artifact, 23Five, Tzadik, and Lovely Music. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Music at Mills College in Oakland, California.

K. Atchley

K. Atchley presents laptop interpretations of digitally generated sound waves and legacy field recordings that reflect and maintain the current of absorbed thought and Fempirical romanticist leanings.
KENNETH ATCHLEY (b. 1954, Lebanon, TN) is a San Francisco Bay Area sound, video, and installation artist who fashions and performs works ranging from pure-tone and noise hymns to distortion-studded, electro-acoustic devotionals. Much of his work from 1997 to 2005 included the use of fountains and his current presentations continue to be informed by that work and study.
Atchley’s performances and works have been featured in venues and festivals including Alternating the Medium (SF), San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, The Kitchen (NYC), T.U.B.E (Munich), CEAIT (Redcat, Los Angeles), Echo De Pensees (CCA, SF), Bang On A Can (NYC), CageFest (SF), Rachel Hafferkamp (Cologne).
Atchley’s CD of solo, electro-acoustic-noise works Fountains was released by Auscultare Research. His duet Sealed Cantus with John Bischoff has been released on Bischoff’s 23Five CD Aperture. An interpretive score for 14251 was included in SoundVisions (published by PFAU Neue Musik, Germany, 2005). The libretto of his opera Edision’s Last Project(ION) and lyrics to the choral work Lumiere de Main were published in the book the guests go in to supper (Burning Books, USA). His article, “An Introduction to the Operatic Works of K. Atchley Including an In-Depth Discussion of an Original Opera Titled Don Giovanni,” published in the Leonardo Music Journal. A profile of his work appeared in the June, 2005 issue of The Wire (#256).

Promo information:

http://www.johnbischoff.com/KAJB_promo

Golden Fur has quickly made a name for itself as a vibrant new ensemble that fearlessly crosses musical boundaries to create compelling and complex, yet inclusive, performance experiences. The trio recently completed their 2008/2009 debut concert series, commissioning and premiering works by Australian composers Anthony Pateras, Marco Fusinato, Alexander Garsden and Kate Neal. The series also featured world premieres of works by Jaap Blonk and Phill, as well as Australian premieres of works by Klaus Lang, Thomas Meadowcroft, Sam Hayden, Alvin Lucier and Jani Christou. In 2010, they will give Australian premieres of works by Iancu Dumitrescu, and Ana-Maria Avram, and world premieres of works by Cat Hope, David Chisholm, Robert Ashley and Natasha Anderson.

Their improvised performances with strings and MaxMSP live-signal processing, embrace a surprising fluidity of languages, drawn as much from the contemporary classical, as from the experimental, concrète and avant-garde musical realms.

Golden Fur has collaborated with performers such as Anthony Pateras, Deb Kayser (Elision), Erkki Veltheim (Australian Chamber Orchestra, Elision), Scott Tinkler (Australian Art Orchestra) and Thembi Soddell. Its members have previously performed for the Melbourne International Arts Festival (2006, 2007, 2008), Chamber Music Australia, Melbourne International Film Festival (a collaboration with David Shea), New Music Network (Sydney), The Melbourne International Biennale of Exploratory Music, and the What Is Music? Festival. Golden Fur has also performed and recorded works by Helmut Lachenmann, Sofia Gubaidulina, Morton Feldman, Luciano Berio, Giacinto Scelsi, Liza Lim, Olivier Messiaen, Anestis Logothetis, Salvatore Sciarrino, Iannis Xenakis, to name but a few.
